Keeping Yourself in Check as a Reseller

8 Minute Read

You Better Check Yourself Before Your Wreck Yourself

check yourself

Yep, Ice Cube was right. Sometimes we all just need to take a step back and check ourselves. Luckily, a few of us have spouses, loved ones, or besties to help us out with that. Mine was the hubs of course. Let me explain.

A few days ago, I went sourcing. (This is of course the funnest part for most of us resellers!) It was great, my dad and his girlfriend came along too, and we made a day of it and grabbed lunch at a cute little diner. We spent longer than I’d imagined being out that day, and so I had a lot to catch up on when I returned home.

The hubs, (his name is Ben, so I don’t have to keep referring to him all weird like). Anyways, Ben, my main squeeze, got off of work early that day, which was freaking awesome! And usually we like to keep it pretty chill the rest of the day when that happens. But I had like, all the things to do still! So I was a little bit panicked.

We got some chores around the house done, (yes, I still call them chores, well, because they are!). And then we proceeded to run to the store and grab a quick bite to eat. All the while, mind you, I was still wondering how in the world I was going to have time to get all of this work I needed to get done! I still needed to steam, photograph, measure, upload and list, bag inventory, answer questions, send offers, package sales, print labels, and the list goes on!

Don’t Sacrifice Your Chill Time

At this point, I was getting a little cranky, because it was getting late, and we go to bed pretty early these days. (I’m not kidding…I’m talking like 8:30, because we enjoy going to the gym early, really really early, like 3:45…AM.) So all I could think about was the fact that I was getting quite literally, none of my work done and time was running out.

Unfortunately, me being cranky and all, did nothing to help the situation. I chalk this up partially because I slacked off earlier in the week, (when I could have been doing those things ahead of time). And also partially to me not being as consistent with my meditation and stretching routines. Obviously, both were my fault.

I’ve been going hard on reselling lately, and have been trying to ramp up my eBay store. I’m currently up to 35 listings a day, and it’s getting tricky. I like to share this number, because when I was starting out, this was a number I could never seem to figure out from other resellers I looked up to. I feel like it’s a pretty big deal, because the more you list, the more you sell. (In theory).

But as a one woman business, (with occasional help from the hubs when he’s not working 70 hour weeks), it is getting harder and harder to keep up with. My end goal for this year is 60/day. (Fingers crossed!)

Keep the Little Things in Mind

Since the whole “going hard” thing really got going, it’s been drastically reducing the amount of free time I have on a regular basis. This includes time that I usually spend on housework, cooking/baking nice meals, meditating/exercising *hence the 3:45am wake up call,* and relaxing time with family or friends.

And since I have less time for these wind down, easy going activities, I feel as though I’ve been a little more stressed and wired than usual, (or than I should be). The fact of the matter is, that I really need to put myself in check, make sure I take my accountability partner into consideration, and take a step back.

I feel as resellers, we can really sink our teeth in too far sometimes, and it’s hard to see the light some days. At the end of the day, this is still a business, (which of course I want to thrive), but moreover, I want my family to thrive most, and be able to spend time with them without the frazzle.

It’s hard to recognize this, usually because you’re so engrossed in what you’re doing, that you don’t even notice it may be affecting the way your day is changing, or the people around you. Try to be sure that you’re always making time for what is most important in life.family

That of course will vary depending on your own personal preferences, or personal situation, but as a wife, I want to make sure I’m providing enough time for my better half. I want to be 100% present in our time together, and not get caught up in running to the office a million times during dinner or before bed to answer questions or check for a flaw.

What Changes will I be Making?

This is why as of today, I will be implementing a few changes in my routine. I will be sure to focus on returning to my meditation and workout regimen, where I include a short walk outside, and maybe even a little reading or crocheting time. (Right now, I’m reading 12 Rules for Life, by Jordan Peterson. It’s a great book, and I would highly suggest checking it out.)

I would like to be able to have as much work as I can done and put away, by the time my husband arrives home. (If this is something you are interested in, you could apply this to kids/etc.) As in, make sure you have a start and an end time for your work. Don’t mix the two if at all possible. (This is not always the case, but for most instances, it is doable).

Also, another activity I would like to make more time for again is baking and cooking, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen during the summer canning and cleaning vegetables, and in the winters I love to bake and create freezer meals or crockpot meals. I’ve definitely been slacking on that this winter, due to being much busier with work.

My point is simply this, don’t forget to include time for the things that make you happy. Do the things you love, but also make time for work. I know it’s not always easy for us resellers, (and really anyone who works from home now these days), to keep work and home separate, but I definitely think we could do a little better with this. I know I can.

  • What tasks could you complete more efficiently, to allow more time to do the things you love?
  • How could you adjust your schedule so that you can implement these rules more accordingly?

Share these tips and tricks below in the comment section, so that we can all continue to learn from one another, and not only succeed in our small businesses, but also in life.

I know this post was a little longer today, but I hope it was relatable, as I like to keep this blog mainly focused around business as resellers. However, I felt as though it was necessary, as it is something a lot of us forget about far too often. Don’t leave out the things that are most important to you.

Growing your business (no matter if it is reselling or something else), takes time, effort, and energy. (And a lot of it!) Just make sure that you are also always keeping some time, effort and energy to spend on the things that matter most.

Thank You!
