Planning To Scale Your Reselling Business In 2024

Hey guys. Coming at you today on a more serious note! There’s a lot of controversy out there about how us resellers are going to survive let alone thrive in the upcoming year…or years! As more of us venture online to share our stories and more new resellers start to grow their knowledge, there are tons of comments regarding if there will be enough to go around.  Or if we’re going to run short of suppliers, or if we are even doing any good by our buying and selling methods. Let’s talk today about these things and what our plans are here at Rooted Drawers. Perhaps we can inspire you to do something similar, or forge a whole new path of your own! Let’s get it after it and look at planning to scale your reselling business in 2024!!

Getting started reselling in 2024

Getting Started Reselling in 2024

Every day a new reseller stumbles onto the online world of selling and realizes the humongous potential that awaits them. Only to gather a little bit of information to start selling, and then find out how “watered down” this whole industry is…or so they say.

The issues are among us for sure, but the fact of the matter is simple. There is ENDLESS inventory to find their ways to our stores, and the options for getting there are endless as well. I’m sure each and every one of us resellers have found their own means of inventory that works best for them, because there really is so many different ways to acquire it.

As we’ve moved throughout our years of selling, we’ve tried multiple different avenues on which way would really work best. Would it be focusing on one specific niche?? Narrowing things down to just one category? Or perhaps just listing anything and everything would work the absolute best, right?

Wrong.

Don’t Give Up!

All of these roads kept turning us to one corner where we would back ourselves in and scramble again to get back out. This is when a lot of newer resellers decide to give up. Like any job, career or challenge, it gets hard. And my friends, trust me when I say that it gets even harder once you start to build your inventory and have more customer service to attend!

Of course, as time goes on we continue to do better and better with time management and with organization. Listing is basically a breeze these days, where it used to suck my soul dry. I actually enjoy it now. Pictures is where I begin to lose my mind a little!

What’s your recent reseller struggle?

The truth is, with time comes experience, and with experience comes more understanding about what it is that actually worked best all along.

How Rooted Drawers is Planning to Scale Our Reselling Business in 2024

In 2024 we plan to do big things. Bigger than before and we’re very excited about it all! Stay tuned to hear about them if you’d like. But as of now, we have come to learn one key factor about our relationship with incoming inventory.

At first we tried going the route of just one category, then incorporating all things, then back to one category, and then bundles and lots and then specific items again and then finally, back to all things. That’s where we’re at today. It’s been a rollercoaster to say the least.

Then we tried to use one platform, then two, then several others along the way only to fumble a billion times with delisting and relisting and selling similar and cross-posting and sending offers and creating coupons and the list goes on!

Today, and for the foreseeable future however we’re focusing on one thing and one thing only – what we have.

Using What We Have and Capitalizing on That

We talked about this briefly in the past post, about how we have begun to understand that using what we have and not focusing on what we don’t, has helped us to begin scaling immensely this year. Instead of reaching for the stars when we’ve already found the moon, it’s skyrocketed our sales and the whole “running out of inventory” problem just simply doesn’t exist anymore.

My advice to you as a new, or seasoned!, reseller is this. Find products around you and list them all. Ask friends, ask neighbors, family and your school friends or co-workers what they’re looking to part with. Either offer them a deal in bulk, or perhaps they’ll want to just pass their goods onto you instead of Goodwill!

While you build your dream, remember that it doesn’t take a fortune to get there. Reselling is a blessing as we aren’t required to put anything into it. If you continue to invest what you make, (and what you learn from feedback given along the way), you can continue to rise above and really scale your reselling business in 2024.

Time to Grow Your Inventory – But How?

When your business starts getting to the point where you can afford to invest more heavily into new inventory, think outside the box! Keep building your contacts and check out soon-to-end yard sales to see who’s willing to give the rest away for the right price, (and sometimes that price is free!)

If you still have trouble obtaining new inventory, let me ask you this. By chance, have you discovered any downsizers around you? People moving out their college-aged kids or maybe heading to Florida to become snowbirds? Or maybe you learned of a few estate auction houses around your area that you could invest in before or after their weekend sales.

Seriously, my fellow resellers, our options remain endless. If companies like Lululemon, The North Face, Patagonia and Carhartt are moving into the secondhand realm, don’t let that scare you off from building your brand. Just because they’re now becoming larger versions of us resellers, doesn’t mean that we can’t monopolize on the other options that are available around us!

We need to think bigger, broader, and find the routes that aren’t so often taken by the little guy. Sure, bigger sellers may be able to go into these same places and buy out their entire stockpile, but perhaps your expertise lies in one specific niche that you can snag at a better price.

Tips For New Resellers Planning to Scale Reselling Business in 2024

For us, we plan to continue on the “everything” path. We’ve been lucky enough to establish a base of contacts during our time as resellers, and because of that, we now have a steady flow of inventory of all kinds coming our way. (Which is why I mentioned in the last post that knowledge truly is the key to success!)

If we wanted to focus on just one category, just one niche, it’s truly possible. Every business and business-owner will be different, but for us, this is what works. The more inventory we have incoming, the more studying that we start doing. This has allowed us to open our arms to many local opportunities and save oodles on expensive thrift store prices.

In 2024, we plan to continue to grow those relationships and continue to grow our knowledge behind the new pieces we come across.

My personal favorite is when we have the opportunity to go into a home that’s no longer being used and find the immense amount of amazing items that were left behind. Learning about their history and their value is two of the most fun parts of this job in my opinion!

As for your road, which one will you take? Will you continue to raid the thrifts? Or do you have other plans for the year ahead? Let us hear about your 2023 experiences and what you’re planning to change (or not!) in the new year!
