How I Discovered an Often Forgotten Place to Source for FREE

4 Minute Read

Finding the Freebies!

So this past weekend the hubs and I were looking for more nooks and crannies we haven’t gone through yet to declutter. The good news is, we’ve pretty much ransacked the entire house over the last year or so. Therefore, leaving hardly any spaces left to go through. It was a rainy, blah kind of day out though, so we were obviously stuck inside anyways. We decided to keep thinking about where we hadn’t ventured to yet. (Read here about my top 10 most unlikely places to source).

After a while he said to me, “How about the attic?” Ugh, I thought. This is something I’d be putting off literally for YEARS. So, this was the bad news. He was right though, procrastination never helps anyone, and it has really needed done. I’d no idea however when I started going through things, that I would actually be able to source from there! (FOR FREE)!

You see, my attic is a pain to get to in the first place. It’s one of those funky ones that has the pull down rickety ladder that you think’s going to crumble under you someday. The kind that snags your shirt every time you get to the top where the nails are barely holding it on. (At least this is what happens to my accident prone self).

Conquering the Piles

Anyways, when I got to the top, the reality came flooding back over me that I’d just thrown things up there over the years. We just surpassed our 6th wedding anniversary, (yay)! And we’ve acquired quite the lot of “stuff.” It was frustrating really, how things just add up so quickly and you don’t even remember where they all came from. Let alone how they all got up here.

ladderHe helped me, I mean, he stood on the ladder for about 10 minutes while we stared at all the stuff stacked everywhere. The piles were overflowing and overwhelming to say the least. Finally, he decided he was going to sweep the house instead. How was I to complain?! Alas, there I was, in this ridiculous circle of stuff alone and irritated that I let it get that way in the first place.

After a little longer of me staring back at the piles of mixed up items everywhere, I decided to dig in. We had finally purchased a pile of bins from Wal-Mart to use to get it organized a little better, and to my surprise, we used them all. All 13 of them, in just a few hours. I was flabbergasted. And angry to say the least. All of these things, just sitting up there taking up space and wasting away.

FREE Inventory

So I’ll get onto the moral of the story, since that’s what you’re all reading this article for anyways! The bright side, was that 2 bins were made FULL of new inventory that I could resell. Of course, we had a few trash bags as well, but this was a major win for me. I got to declutter (a third, *gasp*) of my attic, and somehow scored 2 fresh bins of items to list in my stores. This was a win in my eyes. And even better when I thought about how much was left to go through, and how much more I can potentially find!

I was so excited to be able to have found perfectly good items that I wasn’t going to use anymore, that someone else could appreciate instead. I’ve done pretty well this year at keeping my cog (cost of goods) down, (read more about how to keep expenses low in this article), and this lot was a major bonus. Since it’s nearing the end of the year, I’ve been trying not to source too much and just use what I have, so that I don’t have to add anything extra into my taxes when that time comes.

Often Forgotten

Being able to gain some fresh, new, FREE inventory really made me happy. I wanted to write this article because I think that a lot of times we forget what’s lying around in our own homes. I know thrifting is by far the most fun part of reselling for us all. But instead of going out and spending those hard earned dollars, I encourage you to take another look around your home.

Selling something with a COG that equals ZERO is something to rave about. It feels great when you’re adding up your expenses for the year, and it also makes your house less decluttered, which is vital to a healthy mind. (Read more here about how I stay healthy while working from home).

I hope reading this quick article makes you think twice about your forms of sourcing. Remember to always try to keep your cog as low as possible, so that you can keep your profit margins at their best. Don’t be shy to ask around to friends and family, or members of your community for things they may be throwing out or saving to take to Goodwill. I’m certain they’ll most likely rather give the items to you instead.community

Keep your mind healthy, your home decluttered and get moving! There’s most likely more profit hiding around your home than you think.

Thank You!
