How To Resell While Traveling

Have you ever thought about being your own boss? How about the founder of your very own little startup? If you’re anything like me, you’d probably really like to be both. Starting your own business comes with flaws though, as with every other career. Recently, the hubs and I went on a trip for longer than usual…and my business was one of my first thoughts and concerns. Today I’d like to share with you just a few tips on how to travel while running your reselling business from afar. Let’s get into it!

Plan, Plan, and Then Plan Some More

Planning is no joke when you work from home. Sure, you may have all the kinks worked out when you’re actually, well, home…but what about when you want to take some time away with the family? Or how about that two-person trip you’ve been dreaming about for months (or even years) on end?

Finding ways to manage your business from the beach, the mountains, or just a home away from home can be difficult if you don’t have the right preparations set in line.

Here’s a handful of things I took into consideration before heading out on my *2nd trip* during the time I’ve been a reseller:
  1. Start small. Get yourself a surplus supply of extra inventory and shipping supplies. Oftentimes, this is simply the click of a button to order double what you usually do. (It may be more than you need, but more than enough is better than not enough when you need it most!)
  2. Think ahead. Decide if you want to turn on Vacation Mode in your store(s) or not. Weigh the pros and cons and figure out which works best for you and your business.
  3. Ship and answer messages up until the very day that you leave. Prepare your vacation items ahead of time, so that you can spend the last day finalizing anything in your business before you head out.
  4. Prepare some pre-typed messages for the ones that will surely come through while you’re away. Have a friend or family member send these in lieu of you, or keep them handy on your phone to send yourself once a day.
  5. Teach said friends or family members the ins and outs of shipping. This will allow you to *not* have to rely on Vacation Mode. (More on that in a post to come!)

Set Up Shop Away From Home

If you’re not sure when or where you’re going yet, make sure you do a little extra each day so that you’re fully prepped when it’s time to schedule a trip and leave your business to fend for itself.

Perhaps you don’t have enough time to list everything ahead of time. Luckily, if you are okay with bringing your laptop on vacation, you can do this from anywhere in the world. (Mostly!)

Make sure to do the math and take lots of extra pictures so that you can upload these during airport waits, while in line at the food court, or waiting on luggage or a taxi.

Then simply list while you’re in the air on your way to the next best destination!

Be sure to keep a line of communication open in the case that someone is looking over your business on the home front. Keep in mind that you may not always have great service, so think ahead and make sure you’re always planning for these situations.

Use different forms of communication if need be, such as email, text, or apps such as WhatsApp, etc. The more the better, so that in the case of an actual (real or business-related) emergency, someone can always get in touch with you!

Traveling Is Too Good To Miss Out On

If you’re leaning back and forth about whether or not a trip is in your future, I say go for it. If the pandemic taught us anything about traveling, it’s that we can really and truly take it for granted all too often.

Embrace the explorer inside you and make new plans to travel abroad! Take some time to put together details for your next trip to the countryside or to the big apple! The time has never been better.

As travel opens up more and more during Summer this year, I fully encourage you to take a step back from your business and breath some fresh air into your lungs!

We can get overwhelmed and bogged down by a mass of messages all day long, or notifications that never stop. This can lead to anxiety issues among many other forms of chaos.

Treat yourself and take a break from your business. Just be sure to take note of the points above and prepare properly, so that your business can thrive while you get the chance to feel more alive!

Happy planning!
