Let’s face it. We’ve probably all been stuck in the “I don’t know what to do” phase of managing our reselling inventory. Today, I’d like to help you navigate through that phase, by going over how my husband and I have been doing just that. Yep, I brought in the big guns for this turnover and it’s really been making a huge impact on my business. Alright, let’s get started on learning how to reorganize your reselling inventory!
Take a Step Back From Your Inventory
Sometimes to see the bigger picture, we really need to just sit down and take a step back from our business. We can get easily overwhelmed with the everyday to-do’s and before we know it we’re knee-deep in items that have no homes in our home office.
Been there, still doing that.
The difference is realizing when you have a problem. That’s what they always say, right? Well, my problem was a whole bunch of stuff and not a whole lot of places to put said stuff. We’ve talked about this teeny problem before on the blog.
After several days, weeks, and even months, *gasp* of tripping over baskets and bins and bags of new treasures, I’d finally had it. We’re only human after all.
Have accountability when your reorganize your reselling inventory
I went to my husband to ask him to help me get organized and get moving back in the right direction. I think we all really need some kind of accountability partner now and then and he’s mine.
First off, I give him, (and any other spouse or significant other out there), that are completely fine with having an entire reselling business just bursting at the seams in one (or several) rooms of our homes. They really have some serious kind of patience.
We stepped back and took a good look at it all. Then, we got to digging.
Don’t Keep EVERYTHING, “Just Because.”
It’s hard not to get at least a little bit attached to certain items here or there. Maybe we picked it up at a particularly special spot, or perhaps our new inventory has its own story behind it. (I’ll tell you about my experience in a post to come).
The unfortunate thing is though, that when we keep EVERYTHING (but the kitchen sink)…unless you’re an expert kitchen sink reseller…we tend to not move as many items and hold on to items that may never have a chance of selling, to begin with. This is why you should reorganize your reselling inventory today!
A good way to combat this is to use the One Touch Rule. Touch that item once, decide which pile to put it into, and move on to the next one. Alas, no more wasted time pockets.
Get through those overflowing, overstuffed bins first and foremost. And yes, you may even just have to go through them one by one. I promise you’ll find prices that are incorrect, missing item specifics, wrong sizes or gender, you name it.
Take your time and do it right the first time around, so that you don’t have to be stuck in this situation again in the future. Sure, audits on your store are necessary, but let’s keep them to a minimum if we’re able to!
