What to Do With Overflowing Inventory?

Hey guys and ladies out there of the reselling world! Lately I’ve been ramping my store up to new heights with the holiday season approaching us, and wanted to relay some of the ways I’ve been handling this mass inflow of new overflowing inventory. It’s a bit hectic around my home office right now to say the least, and I’m hopeful these tips will help the both of us get back into the groove on being better at reselling clothes online!

How Did We Get Here?

Seriously. Sometimes it’s amazing the giant stacks of bins I see staring back at me. It’s amazing, but also overwhelming at times. It’s taken literal years to get to this point, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Over time, things build up in our inventory storage systems, and space can really get to become a huge burden. Finding the best ways to manage our items, (in a small amount of space), is one of the surest ways to keep your items from overflowing and becoming disorganized.

Figure Out the Best System & Stick to It!

The best way I can think of putting this is by using the phrase that Chris over at Daily Refinement calls it. He defines switching things up in our business all the time by saying we get a case of the squirrel brain.

This means that we have a hard time focusing on just one thing as business owners, since we are always finding new ways to improve our systems. True, yes, which is why managing a healthy system from day 1 is going to suit you a whole lot better in the long run.

By figuring out the best system to maintain your inventory the first time around, you’ll have far less problems to worry about in the future.

Problems such as:

  • Lost inventory
  • Misplaced SKUs
  • No SKUs entered
  • Incorrectly labeled bins

The more chaos your reselling inventory is in, the less likely you’ll be able to efficiently and effectively run your business. Keep it simple and you’ll be just fine!

You Have More Inventory Than Space

Perhaps your biggest hangup is the case that you just have a bit of a bulking up problem. It’s okay if you do, that’s the funnest part of being a reseller! I’m pretty sure we all can raise a hand for that, am I right?

Bulking up, especially for the holiday season approaching, is never a bad idea. It’s going to be there when you need it, if you’re not able to source for a day or if your wholesale shipment arrives late.

However, this can often lead to high piles of unlisted inventory, which may spill over into your already listed items. That’s no bueno.

Find ways to liquidate if you must, or start listing more items per day.

Here’s a few ideas for the liquidation method if that’s what you’d prefer:

  • Reselling locally
  • Lotting up items to sell in your online store
  • Running sales or promotions on your products

They say you can never have too much of a good thing, right? So as long as you have strategies in place to manage your current and incoming inventory, you’ll never have too much to go around.
