Last month we had the honor of having been invited to talk about our story that was featured on Starter Story. If you’re not familiar with this website, it is great for entrepreneurs small and large to share their stories of success! It’s been a huge reward to be able to talk about my journey to the masses, outside of my own website. I highly recommend giving them a shout if you’re interested in being highlighted as well!
Rooted Drawers on Starter Story
This whole experience really has been just that. A journey. We’ve talked about journeys in the past on this blog, both big and small. Mine has included as many highs and lows as one may imagine, but alas, here we are in our blissful and beautiful 7th year already!!
In the beginning days of Rooted Drawers, there was no brand, no niche, no understanding of what this whole “reseller” thing was, and definitely no plan to continue forward. It was all so new and so weird but it was working for flipping a few items, so I learned a little and went from there.
I’ll take that back. I had just one plan in mind, and that was to simply be free from a day job long term, and to have the flexibility to spend more time with my family, dogs, and minimal friends. (I’m going to assume most of the world likely feels this same pull towards freedom!)

Reselling Brings Freedom
It was only after I’d realized that I could start flipping things online, (for a higher profit than most of your local stores), that I could basically have the job of my dreams. No, reselling was not that job. Freedom *inside* of a job, was what I needed and craved.
Becoming a reseller has granted me more opportunities than you could shake a stick at. What if said stick was a big stick? You’d probably not be able to shake said stick so many times. (Pardon my analogy that Dad and I pondered for a while today! But, nonetheless, it applies!)
It applies to this situation because when you don’t know what something is, you have no way of knowing how valuable and wonderful it can become when you bring it further into your life. No, most sticks are not valuable…but you get the point! However, as a reseller of all things, I now look for value in all things, including some sticks.
*Interesting Side Note: I just learned a few days ago that sellers online are actually selling *real* hummingbird nests. Real ones. Like, from your yard folks. I advise against this though. This is highly frowned upon in the bird watching community, and is actually illegal in some forms. There are many other things we can flip! So do your research and know what is fair game, and what should instead be left well, for the birds.
Learning How to Run a Business
From flipping a handful of clothes in my closet to flipping everything you could imagine both online and locally these days, you could say I’ve invested a lot of time, energy and efforts into this gig. I’ve learned how to do proper research, find trending items among hundreds of others, create business meetups that make sense, and discuss selling jargon with other sellers around the world.
This journey has been one of a kind.
Sure, there are probably billions of resellers in the world, but each one of us has our own specific and unique journey. That’s what makes it so fun. Not only are we able to learn at an endless capacity, but we can also grow our businesses to an endless rate. The freedom to do so is more than refreshing, and I highly recommend you go out and find your passion, your niche, your business that’s waiting for you to be discovered.
It is SO worth it. (By “it,” I’m referring to the endless shipping confusion, the late night inventory sessions, the uncomfortable customer conversations, and the piles of “junk” everywhere. *Organized* piles of junk, I’d like to add).

Rooted Drawers Today
Whether or not you agree that reselling can be a “real” job, I’d like to propose the idea that perhaps some of us resellers decide to not just resell, but also teach reselling, and resell all things instead of just one category. This really is a “to each your own” kind of business. What works for you may not work for me, and that is okay. If you’re making sales and in the green, well then, you go girl!
These days Rooted Drawers has developed into RootedinReselling.com, where you are currently at today. It’s grown into 6 selling platforms, 1 coaching program, 1 husband and wife flipping things locally, a team of 3 members located all in different US states, and 1 sister site that dives into more topics related to working from home and creating that all too important balance in your life.
It’s everything I hoped it would be and more.

How Reselling Changed Me
Without this business, I’d be a totally different person. I would have met different people, became interested in different things, and taken different paths. The challenges that you face as a solopreneur, team leader, business owner and partner often take a huge toll on your journey. However, finding those things that really drive you forward can help to ensure to yourself that you are in fact, on the right path for you.
Every day I wake up and think about how excited I am to get to work. I relish in the fact that I don’t stay in bed just because I hate what’s next, but instead can hardly sleep because I can’t wait until the next challenge. Each challenge proves to either be great or suck, because sometimes that’s just how things play out. But each time I find things that are not so fun, I remind myself how great it is to be able to work on things at my own pace and my own time, with my family and dogs surrounding me.
Push yourself. Keep pushing when you feel like giving up, because trust me those days will come. Push more when you feel like you can’t work one more day at your regular job because it’s literally draining you to your core. Keep funding your dreams and keep surpassing your goals one step at a time. Because you’re worth it and deep down, you know that you are.
You’ve got this.
