Flipping The Script On Scavenging: Finding An Alternative Route To Amp Up Our Reselling Game

Hey guys and gals of the reseller world! It’s been a hot minute and I’m here to tell you why. Last time we talked, Rooted Drawers was simply a reselling entity. Since then, we have bulldozed through a new path of finding and flipping items, which has opened doors to grow even bigger and better than before. Let’s talk about it!

At first glance, you may find our whole operation a bit small. We are a wife and husband team, with full-time jobs, 4 pets, and a whole home, garden, and vehicles to tend to. Which you would think leaves very little space for our toes in the reselling space.

Let me tell you a little bit more about our lifestyle.

We frequent the gym 2-3x/week. We practice BJJ 3-4x/week, and we have recently started making time to meal prep on Sunday while we water bath our veggies from the garden from the week prior. That in itself takes around 2-4 hours. Then add in cleaning our home, walking our pups, showering, eating, yard work, and sleeping.

If you’re just starting out in the reselling community, allow me to share something with you.

YOU HAVE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED.

Just get started. Don’t overthink it, don’t crunch the numbers, just hit go. You can do this. If we can have this busy of a schedule and still include all of our reselling escapades, I assure you that you’ll be able to do the same. It helps if you work as a team of course, but if you’re going at it alone. Don’t look back, this is your time to shine, my friend!

Here’s a small list of what is also included in our week’s schedule, (on the reselling side of things!)

  • Finding items online or locally to source
  • Sourcing the items in person or by mail
  • Cleaning or prepping the items to photo
  • Picturing the items and labeling them into specific bins and/or shelves
  • Putting the items away and storing them safely from the elements and places that they won’t get lost!
  • Pulling the items when they sell and then bagging them to keep them safe through their travels
  • Potentially bubble wrapping if the need is present
    • (We stopped including thank you cards and ribbon in recent months. My goal is to get a small 4×6 card with our logo and a short “Thank You” as these are less costly and more efficient for the buyer to view)
  • Weighing and taping the items and adding labels
  • Dealing with lost packages, returns, and customer service
  • Locating items for questions, measurements, or fabric content
  • Listing the items on a platform and researching necessary products
  • Scheduling ahead so that we can rest on vacations!

As you can see, our days can get pretty full. Oftentimes if a good find pops up, we will make a decision to sacrifice gym time or see if we can fit it in on the weekend when we’re not at our full-time gigs. My point is that you have time to become a reseller. You have time to work on your side gig and make it full-time if you so choose. The choice really is yours on how much time you want or need to dedicate to it to grow into the nice little nest egg that you know it can be.

Recently, I received an email inviting me to participate in a local neighborhood app. Once I signed up, I noticed that not only do they have an option to add a business page, but they also allowed you to post items you wanted to sell! I was hooked, as OfferUp is the only option at that time that I had to sell goods locally. This has increased my sales, and finding things on the app to flip has been fun, especially when I get to meet the person behind the item and tell them about what we do! Oftentimes, they will mention other items as well they they’re wanting to get rid of.

Speaking of which, another avenue we’ve recently added to our hustle has been junk removal. Yes, removing unwanted junk from peeps homes, yards, or driveways. Typically, we’ll find these gigs through another local gig app, or through word of mouth from clients we’ve worked with in the past. Many times, we’ll find treasures that we can flip for a profit, but just keep in mind that there are items that come along that aren’t so fun as well.

We’ve removed old trash cans, scrap metal, pieces of wood from an old shed, furniture, glass, appliances, you name it. Guys, these are opportunities. Each removal leaves us feeling good about helping shed clutter from a stranger, but it also leaves treasures that we can flip and relationships that will last. This is something to celebrate!

Whether you feel comfortable branching out into the junk removal world or not, I highly recommend giving it a try! It’s been a huge benefit to us thus far, even opening up the route to investing in our very own storage unit! If you’ve been following Rooted Drawers for a while now, you’ll know that we’ve taken a bunch of twists and turns over the years to continue operating at our best.

The addition of a storage unit has been pretty cool actually, allowing us to branch out of just selling what we can online, to flipping larger goods and furniture to locals. It takes a lot of our extra time, adding several hours of traveling each week into our already full schedule, but we make the most of it by making little lunch dates, and listing on the laptop while one of us drives.

This is an avenue I never thought we’d lean into, but I’m so glad that we did. It’s given us back more time together and has even challenged us at times to load things while understanding each other a little more. If you’re searching for inventory on a budget, this may be the right route for you. If you’re up to adding a little heavy lifting to your game, you’ll get a chance to score some inventory and a workout at the same time!

If you have any questions at all, feel free to comment down below. I’d love to get in touch about any additional tips or tricks to help out in growing your own business. You can do this! Keep your ears open for new pop-ups and stop limiting yourself from what you can do in a day, week, month or year! I even found a whole entire warehouse full of free furniture recently from an old movie prop set. How cool is that?!
