Do You Have a Method to Bagging All Your Inventory?

Hey there! Welcome back or welcome aboard this reselling adventure journey! A lot of inventory has been moved around as of late in my storage area, and I’ve got to thinking about whether or not most of you guys prefer bagging your inventory or not. Do you have a tried and true method already? Do you choose to use Ziplock bags? Polybags? None at all? Let’s get this discussion going!

Where are Your Storage Areas?

When it comes to being a reseller, the options we have are truly endless. From choosing when and where and with whom and why we’re here in the first place, we have all kinds of other decisions to make as well.

One of those decisions just happens to be in the storage category. When your store starts to gain momentum and you get a good bunch of inventory rolled out, you’re going to need a place to put it all.

So, do you have a good loft space? Perhaps an attached or even detached garage? Or maybe you’re like me and don’t have kids yet, so it’s currently sprawled out across several extra bedrooms.

I try my best to contain it to just one space, but it tends to overflow at times. Can you relate?

After you come to the best decision on where you’d like to put everything, you’re going to want to move on to the next decision…to bag or not to bag?!

Choosing whether to bag or not is probably best suited for after you decide where to store everything. Is it a dusty extra loft space? Potentially around messy garage items? Those particular items will most definitely need bins, bags, and maybe even both!

What Method Do I Currently Use?

I have a bit of a mix of things going on at the current time. But I’ll let you know what my favorite is and why! (Clearly, this is my end goal, but going through 0ver 3,000 items can be a bit time-consuming!)

I prefer the latest and greatest method, boxes with Ziplock bags. Let me explain why this is.

I’ve tried it all at this point.

  • Baskets
  • Ikea bags
  • Plastic bins (with and without lids)
  • Shelves
  • Bookcases (yes, really)

Baskets and Ikea bags just get too messy. I tend to keep these for my travels from my storage to my printer, and from my printer to my postman.

Shelves are used mostly nowadays to store bins and boxes. These are suitable for this need and for this need only, unlike the bookcases I’d used in the past. These helped immensely to keep hard goods upright and easy to find when I had more of them in my store.

Let’s talk about plastic bins for a moment. I love them, but I also hate them. With lids, they look pretty. Without, they can start to overflow and get messy again.

Without lids, they save time opening and closing. That’s a win, right? Nope.

At first, I thought this was great, no bin lids, no bagging, it was great. Just pluck your item out and you’re good to go. But then they started getting too stuffed, and it would take forever to find what I was looking for.

This is when things would fall out and get lost. My store would have ended up in shambles if I’d continued on this unorganized path.

My Favorite Method to Date

Luckily, the hubs and I started a new method we discovered on YouTube, and life is much more organized in the storage area these days.

The box and bag method is much easier to locate items and doesn’t break your back when getting it down from the top shelf. I like that they are significantly lighter, stay in one place on their shelves, and have prepackaged items inside ready to pull out and place in a polybag for the customer.

This bagging keeps animal fur, dust, etc. from getting on your items, and ready to ship in as little as 30 seconds. Since the boxes are numbered in order, it’s easy to locate which box you need when pulling your sold goods.

The nice thing about the Ziplock bags is that you get to reuse them! If someone asks a question, you can simply zip it back up after checking on the item, instead of having to pitch a perfectly good poly bag.
