Source Yourself
5 Minute Read
When I say “Source Yourself,” I simply mean source first and foremost from your own closet. If you don’t sell fashion and do better with hard goods or car parts, don’t forget to check around your house or garage! You never know what you may find hiding in a corner just waiting for you! Let’s look at 10 unique places to source reseller items from.
Family
Who better to call next than family? They will always have your back and will most likely be doing some spring cleaning. I’m sure most times they would be willing to help out your small business and throw a few items your way!
Friends
Friends can be quite helpful when they are turning over their closets. A lot of people would rather someone they know make a few extra bucks to pay their car insurance than hauling it over to a large donation center. All you have to do is ask! They free up some space, you have fresh inventory, win-win!
Neighbors
This sort of ties along with the friends category. Neighbors can come in handy whenever you’re looking for some new items to source. This is especially helpful if you live in a community where all of the houses are easily accessible and close to where you reside. You could call some of them up, or knock on doors instead, and see if they’re willing to donate anything to your growing business.
(Another idea is to print out mailbox inserts to allow them to read your business name, browse your site, and donate if they choose to after seeing your success! You could even trade a service to source their items, such as babysitting, tutor lessons, dog walking, etc.)
Thrift Stores
This is an obvious one, but not a lot of people know that so many actually exist. Check online to see how many local stores you have available in your area, jot them down, and keep a list in your car so that you can easily reference them when out and about.
Flea Markets
Flea markets aren’t always up and running, but when they are, they can be a great sourcing spot. Since they normally have a bunch of different vendors from different areas with booths, it’s kind of a bunch of little thrift stores in one place. Sometimes items can be overpriced, but a lot of times you can find some great deals as well.
Yard Sales
Depending on where you live, this could be a seasonal sourcing opportunity or a yearlong one. (Unfortunately, I am in western Pennsylvania, so we have a rather limited yard sale season! Sad face). I am quite jealous of the resellers that live in Florida or California and get to go all year long! However, if you’re in an area similar to mine, I usually find myself stocking up during the summer months. (I’ve decided that for next year, I plan to save a little every week until then so that I already have a honeypot waiting for yard sale time! Yay!)
Estate Sales
Estates sales can be most often found during summer months, but don’t fret! They also can be found year-round, (that is if you’re willing to brave the weather in the colder months). Usually, that is my favorite time to go to estate sales. Not as many people are willing to stand in 32-degree weather to see what the steal of the day may be. (I try to stick to ones that don’t have a company attached, as they are normally less picky on pricing things to sell, and may even be willing to negotiate with you.)
Outlets
Outlets can be a little more costly to source at. But! If you sign up for their email list, you can usually snag some great discounts on lots or if you’re willing to buy in bulk. (This will typically require a larger investment upfront but can be worth it in the long run when you only have to list an item once, and just change the quantity or sizing.)
*When referring to “Outlets,” I mean such as Adidas, Nike, etc.”
Colleges
This is probably the most unlikely on the list of unlikely’s! I mention colleges because having gone to one myself as well, I know for a fact that kids will throw out nearly everything. This boggles my brain, truly. I would have to say that I was always the more frugal one of my friends, but a lot of times what can’t fit into cars to make the trip back home will just end up sitting in the front lots or against buildings.

When you’re out in the wild, there can be some pretty cool sourcing opportunities that may pop up. I suggest taking a road trip to a farther away town or city, to freshen up your inventory with some items you may not find locally. This can be a fun road trip for you and your friends, or you could even make it into a weekend getaway with the family!
