Why Comfort is Key in Your Work Space

8 Minute Read

Creating Your Comfort Space

Comfort: “a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint.”meditate, relax, comfort

This is super important to establishing and maintaining in your workspace, as it adds to your physical and mental well-being. I found this out the long and hard way. I was squishing myself into a tiny work area with minimal desk space in the beginning of my journey. Let me explain where I’ve come from there.

I’ll start by saying that I literally can’t even remember how many times I’ve moved my desk around, or, “office space,” if you will. I’m sure a lot of folks have started to notice these little things, more often since more people are working from home today.

Creating “physical ease and freedom” in your work area, can truly impact the amount, or quality of work that you’re putting out into the world. It can hinder your creative content, and make you feel gloomy or cramped.

In this post, I want to cover what few changes I’ve made to my work area over the years. I want to also talk about how they have improved my capability to not only get more work done, but also how much more relaxed I feel when “going to work.”

*Quick Update: The post containing more SKUs and letters that will be more in depth, has been moved to 2 Monday’s from now, to allow more room for notes and gathering information. Thank you for understanding and for reading!

Desk, Desk, Goose!

deskI have changed desks approximately 3 different times, and work spaces upwards of 6 times. This is only within about two years, give or take. As for desks, I have gone through a lap desk firstly, before I decided that was really quite hard on my back, and then two regular desks.

The first was a $10 Goodwill steal, and it did the job for quite a while! I am sad to let it go, but it was starting to fall apart, and my father in law hand crafted me a new, beautiful wooden desk from an old sewing machine base. It looks quite lovely with my aromatherapy salt lamp on top, and really sets the chill mode when I wanna get to work.

Recently, I injured myself at the gym, (this makes me VERY bummed!!) Unfortunately, because of this, I’ve not been able to do as much physical exercise. Why I’m mentioning this though, is because it has required me to see a physical therapist for proper (and quicker) recovery. He mentioned in our last session together, that I should consider using a standing desk, and that it may help my posture as well.

Now, I explained to him, that I’ve just received this incredible desk as a gift from my in-laws for Christmas, and I did not want to give it up. Fortunately, he told me there was a workaround to this. He explained that there are smaller, more compact desks out there available, that you can simply set on top of your existing desk, and that they are able to move up and down when desired.

I thought this was a brilliant solution, and I am currently in the process of researching a few good ones. (I’ll update you when I find the winner, and let you know how it works for me!)

Chair -io!

Chairs! These will be the next thing I wanted to chat about. I’ve gone through about 4 chairs, because at first I did NOT think comfort was key. I was wrong. I was totally wrong.

The first two, they were terrible, like literally. The first one creaked and cracked and I thought I would fall through at any moment. It was another Goodwill purchase, that I’d only really bought for decoration purposes. But then, when my business started taking off and I needed a desk and office space, well, I needed a chair too for that desk, so that one worked for the time being.

*Completely Random Side Thought!

*Listen, I’m not sure if anyone out there played Sims growing up, but I certainly was in that following. I was talking to someone about this recently, and mentioned that it quite literally is a lot like real life. Of course I didn’t think that as a teenager, but it was actually pretty good at teaching me that when you start out, simple and affordable is best. Gradually, you move up and gain a little more assets and income, (in life or in your business), which provides you a little extra to use on better quality items. I like to think this is how I went about getting to the items I now use in my work space. It took a little bit of time of course, but gradually, I was able to invest in more quality, long lasting pieces, because I was working hard, re-investing, and saving my profits…kind of like how you do in the Sims!

Anyways, the second chair wasn’t much better. It was a lot more sturdy, but just as uncomfortable. It was hard, bulky, and took up a lot of space, too. That one moved back to my dining table after my mom gifted me her old office chair, and I was happy to see it leave! (That dining table and chairs have also gone since then as well, and the hubs and I now have a cute little 2 top in its place. It is way more aesthetic and fits our small space much better. You live and learn!)

After a year or so of using the actual office chair that my mom gave me, the cushions started wearing out, and my back was really starting to ache when I had to sit in it for extended periods of time. Finally, I caved, and decided it was time for an upgrade.

The Bowery Management Chair by Laura

This chair though. It’s other worldly. Let me tell you why.

After some thorough researching for several days, I finally decided to invest in myself, and purchase one of these. I have comfortably worked from it now, for approximately 3 months, and I haven’t doubted my decision yet. It was an investment, as I said, as it is currently listed at $335.00 on their website.

However, if you use the code EXTRA10, you can score an extra 10% off your order, and shipping is always FREE in only one short business day. That’s quick! It is available on Amazon as well, but I would highly recommend purchasing through their website, as you can take advantage of that coupon code, and the shipping is nearly as fast as Amazon’s Prime.

The website ALSO offers a 60 day trial, and FREE return shipping! Your purchase includes a FULL 2 year warranty as well! What more could you ask for?!

I have ZERO complaints about this chair thus far. And, even though I was kind enough to re gift my old office chair to the hubs for gaming, he still likes to steal my Bowery chair when I’m not using it. It is extremely comfortable to say the least, and he’s considering getting one for himself as well.

The Options are Endless!

They offer SIX different color combos, which I think is amazing. I decided to go with the white and black combo. I thought the white top would look nice with my white walls, and the black bottom would hide any would be spills from tea or lunch! (This hasn’t happened yet, but I like to try to be prepared and think in advance!)

This chair “provides a wide range of ergonomic adjustments to fit your body and seating preferences.” They couldn’t have said it better. It literally adjusts in every way imaginable. This includes, up and down, forward and back, leaning back, and even the arm rests! They’ve thought of everything if you ask me.

I’m incredibly happy with my purchase, and am pleased to say that I believe this will be a long lasting relationship. It helps me with posture, while also providing extreme comfort while sitting for long periods of time. It is not only a beautiful chair to add to your work space, but also an affordable piece to invest in yourself and your comfort.

If you decide to try one out for yourself, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Also, stay tuned for a follow up post coming next Monday, that goes into more depth about the everyday items and gadgets I like to use, to keep my work space clean, comfy, and ready for work.
